HYPERTHERMIA

Hyperthermia: Heat against Cancer

Local Hyperthermia/Oncothermia

In local hyperthermia, the body is subjected to restricted local overheating. The overheating is concentrated on the affected organ or tissue. The organism is thus subjected to less stress than with whole body hyperthermia, because the healthy tissue is not affected. This is also relevant for the comparison with traditional radiation methods and cytostatic treatments: the organism copes better with local deep hyperthermia

Because tumor cells can be invisible for the immune system they can be made visible using local hyperthermia under the influence of heat. This way, hyperthermia can make chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy more effective. In isolated cases, previously ineffective chemotherapy or radio therapy can be made effective in combination with hyperthermia

Cancer cells form “heat shock proteins” under hyperthermic conditions; these proteins appear on the surface of the degenerated cells. Now the body’s own immune system detects these proteins as extraneous cells, giving a clear indication for the immune cells to fight the cancer cells. Healthy cells do not form heat shock proteins and are not damaged in the process

Therapies

During the treatment, which lasts between 60 and 120 minutes, the patient lies comfortably in a pleasantly heated treatment bed. Modulable short waves flow through the healthy tissue via an applicator and accumulate exclusively in the tumor area. High temperatures of between 42°C and 45 °C are reached. This temperature damages the cancer cells

In our treatemtn centre, local deep hyperthermia takes place in the same beneficial treatment situation as whole body hyperthermia. Once again, the patient receives comprehensive care in a healing atmosphere

We have successfully used local deep hyperthermia for peritoneum metastases, relapses in the region of various organs, particularly the female breast, for brain tumors, tumors in the stomach region, prostate-tumors and inoperable tumors

Local deep hyperthermia is often used in case

- Carcinoma

- Recurrence

- Metastases

In our experience, local deep hyperthermia is particularly effective for inoperable tumors and metastases, and for frequently recurring tumor types. However, it is also used for limited tumor onsets. We have successfully used local hyperthermia in our clinic for breast cancer, sarcomas, skin tumors as melanomas, bone metastases as well as carcinomas of the lung, the stomach, pancreas, the gallbladder and kidneys

The advantages of local deep hyperthermia may be summarised as follows

Enhances the effects of radio- and chemotherapy

- No external interference with your organism

- No anesthesia, no side effects

- Outpatient treatment method

- No complication, no pains due to hyperthermia

Whole Body Hyperthermia

A healthy organism reacts to the threat of illness with regulated increase in temperature. In cases of acute infections, high fever develops and can trigger an enhanced immune response effectively defeat infection. Body temperature plays a crucial role in the most complex regulation of the immune system. Fever can be considered as being a temporary "special immune program" of nature.

Fever as a response to an infection can not be equated with hyperthermia as a physical heating of the body.

Nevertheless, increasing systemic body temperature by therapeutic hyperthermia can result in a sustained stimulation of otherwise inhibited immune activity in cases of susceptibility to infections, in chronic infections, as well as in anti-tumor immune response. On the other hand, fever-range hyperthermia can have an anti-inflammatory effect in case of chronic inflammation and auto-immune diseases. Hyperthermia can help to "reset" the immune system and overcome chronic pathologic dysfunctions that came about as a result of a too little or too much immune activity.

Recent comprehensive reviews on the immune effects of fever and of hyperthermia are OPEN ACCESS available:

Beside immune effects, whole-body hyperthermia has strong perfusional effects and is effective in relaxing deep-seated muscle layers, reducing chronic pain disorders.
Because of its simple principle and the natural methodogy, whole-body hyperthermia was adopted as one of the earliest medical methods of mankind. Its usage and its many application have been recorded in various cultures for thousands of years - look at "
History of Fever therapy and Hyperthermia".

Given its history, whole-body hyperthermia within fever range has proven safety and a very low risk of adverse effects if basic criteria of indications and contra-indications are followed.

It is an obligation to save and develop this precious tradition by maintaining and spreading its use as a basic tool of natural healing and as an adjunct to conventional therapies.
Moreover, clinical studies must be conducted to gather more higher-quality scientific evidence.

The three levels of whole-body hyperthermia (WBH)

Subclinical, "mild" WBH: till 38,5°C

Fever-range, "moderate" WBH: 38,,5° - 40,5 °C

Extreme WBH: > 40,5°C- 42°C

At our Centre we usually apply Fever-range WBH

Intravenous Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a nutrient that is found in food, such as oranges, grapefruit, papaya, peppers, and kale, or in dietary supplements. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. It also works with enzymes to play a key role in making collagen. Vitamin C is also called L-ascorbic acid or ascorbate.
Vitamin C may be given by IV infusion or taken by mouth. Much higher blood levels are reached when vitamin C is given intravenously. When given by intravenous (IV) infusion, vitamin C can reach higher levels in the blood than when it is taken by mouth.

At the Centre for Hyperthermia in Amsterdam we administer 25.000 mg or 50.000 mg depending on a few factors like bodyweight and kidney functions
